😇 The Hiring Hero: One Manager’s Struggle Against Talent Shortages
In a previous post we discussed a situation where a hiring manager doesn’t listen well to a recruiter or a recruiting agency.
Indeed, employers sometimes refuse to change their processes and requirements: they want to find a miracle candidate who will adapt to all of this.
Now we want to look at the opposite case: when the hiring manager showed flexibility and even took on some of the recruiter’s work.
Our hero is a CTO hiring people for his team (we won’t name the company to maintain confidentiality).
Starting conditions:
- Unpopular industry
- High qualification requirements
- Below-market salaries
- Office work
Mission impossible: finding people who would agree to this. Our hero did not despair and did not blame the recruiters. He began to act himself:
- Lowered hiring criteria: besides senior-grade candidates, he considered middles and juniors.
- Personally called candidates instead of a recruiter and invited them for interviews.
- He raised people in the team and set up internal training.
- He created a friendly and motivating atmosphere in the team.
The CTO’s actions paid off. He managed to assemble a team, the hired employees were motivated to work. Yes, salaries in the company remained below market, and people left because of this periodically. And yet, turnover decreased: the average length of service in this CTO’s team exceeded three years.
